Patrick Reed, Justin Rose, Jayden Schaper, Bubba Watson, Tom McKibbin, Nicolai Hojgaard, Adrian Meronk, Tyrrell Hatton and Andy Sullivan all missed the cut at the Open de Espana in Madrid, leaving several of the DP World Tour’s biggest names out of the weekend.

The tournament is the penultimate stretch of the DP World Tour season and features a strong field at Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. A national open title is up for grabs, along with places in the season-ending playoffs and a PGA Tour card for 2027.

Patrick Reed (+2)

Patrick Reed was looking to extend his lead over Rory McIlroy in the Race To Dubai standings, but missing the cut could cost him top spot. Eugenio Chacarra, despite a broken toe, is challenging for the national title in his own backyard. Only a victory will let the Spaniard overtake Reed, but a second or third place would be enough to overhaul McIlroy and move into second.

Reed is recovering from the injury that forced him out of the BMW PGA Championship, and this week brought no points. He improved to a level-par 71 on Friday, but his opening 73 on Thursday cost him, and he missed the weekend by a single stroke.

Justin Rose (+2)

Justin Rose finished T18 at the Tour Championship on the PGA Tour, but his return to Europe has not gone well. He finished T51 at the BMW PGA Championship and then missed the third-round cut at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He shot 72-72 in Madrid for a two-over total and missed the weekend by just one shot.

Jayden Schaper (+2)

Jayden Schaper has seen his strong start to the season fade. The South African won the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the Mauritius Open back to back at the start of the year, but he has missed his second cut in a row and third in four starts. A T36 at Wentworth was his only recent result of note. He entered the week seventh in the Race To Dubai, but a 73-71 finish sent him home early.

Bubba Watson (+3)

Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson made his debut in the tournament, but it did not go to plan. He opened with a four-over 75 on Thursday, which left him with an uphill battle. He shot a one-under 70 on Friday but was still a couple of shots short of the cut. Watson also missed the cut the previous week at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Tom McKibbin (+3)

Tom McKibbin had been in good form, with a T6 at the British Masters and a T5 at the Irish Open in consecutive weeks. That form has now deserted him. The Northern Irishman has missed the cut in his last two events, after also failing to make the weekend at Wentworth.

Nicolai Hojgaard (+4)

Nicolai Hojgaard made a hole-in-one on the third hole on Friday, but it could not save his round or his week. It was his fourth consecutive missed cut on the DP World Tour. He struggled and was wayward in an opening 74, and he could not break par on Friday, finishing four over. Hojgaard began the week 100th in the Race To Dubai, so he faces a huge task to reach the season-ending playoffs.

Adrian Meronk (+5)

Last week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship winner, Adrian Meronk, struggled in Spain. He opened with a 72, but a 75 on Friday condemned him to a missed cut just one week after tasting victory.

Tyrrell Hatton (+6)

Jon Rahm has made headlines by quitting LIV Golf, and his Legion XIII teammate Tyrrell Hatton remains focused on the DP World Tour for now. Things did not go well for him in Spain. An opening 76 on Thursday did the damage, and although he improved to 72 on Friday, he was nowhere near the cut mark. It is back-to-back missed cuts for the Englishman.

Andy Sullivan (+9)

Former Ryder Cup player Andy Sullivan was ninth in the Race To Dubai heading into Spain, despite withdrawing from the French Open on his previous start. He made a poor start on his return, shooting an opening 78. A 73 on Friday offered some improvement but was not enough to reach the weekend.
